Sketching: Black-necked Stilt

Took a trip to Monterey today to visit the aquarium and grab a beer at Alvarado Street Brewing. It's been a while since I last went to the aquarium and it's just as great as I remember it. Only now, I know so many more names of fish and birds. It's crazy how much I've learned about wildlife since meeting Eva.

Surprisingly, one of my favorite exhibits today was the shore bird aviary. The aquarium rescues a lot of injured birds or nest eggs whose parents have gone missing. They're taken care of until they're better and then let go. This is the closest I've ever gotten to these types of birds - they're all over the Foster City bay trail, but you can never get close enough to them without them flying away (or they're too far to get close to).

This was my small book sketch - initial sketch done with an HB followed by shading various tones and trying to get feather shadows in 2B, 4B, and 6B.
