I always thought Spider-Man was cool. My initial exposure to Spider-Man came from a Sega Genesis game (which I was never any good at) and the Fox version of the Spider-Man cartoon. It was pretty great - I learned the initial mythology from that. I never had as much interest in the comics until recently. After watching Civil War a few years back and, more recently, Avengers Infinity War, I've been hooked! Eva got me Ultimates vol 1 and then I decided to get the Marvel Unlimited app to try for a month. I've been reading the Civil War series and I'm super excited to get more into comics now!
Today's drawing was inspired by a tribute piece I saw on YouTube. Since I've been watching drawing videos lately, this one came up. It was Jim Lee (apparent big comic book artist!) do a Spider-Man after Stan Lee passed away last year. An earlier video I watched (also Jim Lee) had him draw an arm with a regular Sharpee marker and a white-out pen. It was CRAZY how much he could do - but it started with a few simple shapes and muscle shapes and another conversation about using spheres, cylinders, and boxes to figure out initial shading. I guess I probably should have decided on a light source - but I mainly just used a Spider-Man cover for reference (it was The Amazing Spider Man #552 and the little Spider-Man in the corner box).
I started my sketch with a Farber Castell 9000 2B pencil. Sphere, cylinder, and box shapes to begin...
Next I shaded in some areas and sharpened several features...
The 6B came out next. This was mainly to get some additional details in such as the webbing around the costume...
My next part was to outline with my Sakura Pigma Micron 02. I colored in a bunch of the parts I shaded in earlier...
One last bit of shading with the pen involved getting the webbing on the costume...
The final touch was color. I tried out a whole bunch of colors first - you'll see on the opposite page the various colors I tried out. I picked up a brush pen to free hand the semi-circle to mimic what was in the upper left box where the image came from and then cream and true blue to do the background similar to the Spider-Man title text.
And the finished product!
