Sketching and Cooking: Dogs + White Bean and Winter Vegetable Chili

Was a weekend of procrastination. I got in a couple of good runs with my buddies Saturday morning and got in a solo run Sunday morning and we had a holiday party in the evening of Saturday, but otherwise, I decided against doing work and instead let my mind wander and spent some time drawing.

I picked up drawing late 2017 around August. Growing up, I was never really good at drawing. I could get by, but would never have called myself an artist. I spent more time trying to get better at the trumpet (or more likely, watching cartoons and playing video games). These days, outside of running and cooking, I don't feel like I'm a very interesting nor accomplished person. Workwise, I get by, but even though I'm part of an amazing team and company, I often feel as if I'm dragging folks down. To keep myself upbeat, I fall back to my hobbies. And so, late last year, I decided to pick up another hobby just to see where it would go. I've always been inspired by how people can just pick up a pencil and some paper and draw something amazing. While visiting Rome last summer, my wife and I witnessed a girl sketch recreations of sculptures and paintings - I was in awe. A few weeks later, while walking through Michael's to pick up acrylic supplies for my wife, I found a sketch pad and a set of pencils on sale and decided to give it a go A few months later, I'm doing this to unwind =)

Here's my very first sketch:

This weekend, I did two sketches:

Billie
I started this on Saturday and finished Sunday morning. I like the way it turned out, but noticed when I finished I definitely squished the face. I spent a lot of time trying to get the fur to look right - I used what I learned from watching several YouTube tutorials to get strands and coats rather than singular hairs.

This was significant because it was the last page of my sketchbook. I wanted to see how far I had come since I started. Funny thing was, after I finished I noticed I accidentally drew this on the back of my Billie sketch! In the end, I sketched my bourbon drink as the final page. Still, it was awesome to see the progress.

And I cooked one dish: White Bean Chili with Winter Vegetables

This dish was pretty straightforward - chop veggies, cook down with spices, add water, and let simmer. I went light on the spices at first and added more as I cooked. Also, I made a quick quesadilla and supplemented diced red onions as garnish.
